Westfield Historic Industries Preservation Project

Westfield Museum Inc.

The Mission of Westfield Museum Inc. is to showcase Westfield’s unique role in the Industrial Revolution in a venue that features a working 19th Century whip manufactory as well as revolving exhibits of historical significance.

In 2010, Carol Martin founded the Westfield Historic Industries Preservation Project, Inc. (WHIPP) and memorialize Westfield’s significant contribution to the development of the Industrial Revolution in the United States and to create a working museum to preserve the technology that defined Westfield as the Whip City.

In 2012 WMI and WHIPP merged, going forward under the name Westfield Museum Inc.  The first

project of WMI is known as the Westfield Historic Industries Preservation Project.

WMI received a Westfield Bank Future Fund. grant that assisted in defraying the architect’s design fees. Exterior restoration work, funded with a City of Westfield Community Preservation Act Grant, commenced in August 2013. As of February 2014, the work nears completion.

The City of Westfield, Massachusetts was founded in 1669, less than 50 years after the Pilgrims set foot on Plymouth Rock.  Among the oldest communities in Western Massachusetts, Westfield, located in the fertile floodplain of the Westfield River, had by the 1800’s become a center of industry and commerce.  And yet there are today few places to visit to explore our community’s rich and varied history.

In 2007, a group of Westfield residents led by Robert G. Dewey formed Westfield Museum Inc. (WMI) to shed light on Westfield’s contributions to history and culture and to create a venue to house the large and significant collection of art, artifacts, writings and memorabilia concerning Westfield’s past.

Watch for additions to this website as we make progress toward Museum opening, anticipated for late in 2014.  In the meantime, if you would like additional information or to make a donation to assist us in reaching our goal, please click on the “Contact Us” tab.

Westfield Museum Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization.
